About Us.
I started keeping fancy rats around 20 years ago now, my uncle gave me my very first one-a single black buck. When he passed away my parents replaced him and my love for rats went on. When I started keeping rats it was common practice to keep single rats in tiny cages-as far as I can remember pet shops only ever had single rats in. As I got older I started keeping a few rats together and in 2008 I discovered the fancy rats community on the internet. At that point I had 4 girls and 2 boys, and it was then that I really started learning about rats. Up to that point I had hardly heard of anyone else keeping rats as pets let alone that they had a huge fan club!
The rats that I had when I first joined the online community were housed in an old bird cage for the girls and what I now know is a mary cage for the boys. They weren’t in those cages for long after I discovered what fantastic rat cages were available on the market.
Those 6 rats were all pet shop rats but I started having rescue rats not long after joining the forums when I decided to extend my little ratty family. The first was a private rehome who was a very elderly lady then, I had 2 beautiful doe kittens and an adult buck. Since then I have had a mix up of rescue rats, preloved rehomers, breeder rats and a very occasional pet shop rat.
In 2009 I fostered a pregnant doe who gave birth days after she arrived with me, She had 9 kittens of which I ended up keeping 7 and mum. It was a fantastic experience looking after the kittens and seeing them grow but at that point I didn’t have time, room etc to even look into breeding.
I very recently got to experience raising a litter again with the help of a local breeder-this time with a view of whether I wanted to go into breeding myself. I loved it! From trying to get the doe pregnant, to working out what to expect in the litter then watching the babies grow and see what they turned into.
